Peco Artworks - Peco no Kiseki - 12

Though Peco is probably best known for being the original designer of the characters from the newly animated series Mayoi Neko Overrun!, his just released art book Peco Artworks - Peco no Kiseki shows us that his talents in illustrating go far beyond what is presented with that series.

But there is plenty of art work from Mayoi Neko Overrun! in this 96-page, softcover A4-sized art book. The cover art work is newly drawn along with a double-sided fold-out poster, pictured above. The rest of the art works for the series range from the light novel covers and insides to stick posters and other promotional art works.

The book is printed with no overlap between pages, but the images do line up cleanly. The illustrations are also for the most part confined to single pages, so page spreads aren't a big issue in Peco Artworks - Peco no Kiseki. Very few images share a page, so the presentation is higher quality than I expected. Another thing I expected to see in here were the black and white inner drawings from the light novels, but those haven't been included---it's a full color collection.

There are four pages of illustrations from stick posters, all printed at an angle which slightly cuts off the overall image. But, they're stick posters so they never were complete images to start out. There are also promotional poster works of Serizawa Fumino, and also one with her as the Animate mascot, drawn as a special promo for the store. In total, the Mayoi Neko Overrun! takes up 41-pages of this 96-page collection.

The next section features the art work from Peco's Tamafuri (魂振) series which is also a light novel. The series art work is featured over 18-pages and though the art work is slightly older, it has its own style and to me it looks more polished and detailed than much of the Mayoi Neko Overrun! art work.

The final section of the art book features Peco's works from a variety of different titles, along with some of the gorgeous yuri illustrations from the visual novel, Sono Hanabira ni Kuchizuke wo (その花びらにくちづけを).

These illustrations just seem miles away from the Mayoi Neko Overrun! art works in the front of the art book, which by comparison almost look like an oversimplification of Peco's art style. Even though I initially bought Peco Artworks - Peco no Kiseki for the Mayoi Neko Overrun! that I knew would be in it, I found I was even more impressed with the works I didn't expect!

Looking at amazon it seems like at least one person agrees with you ^^. Thinking of dropping some hard earned cash on this one.

Oh whoa! Although I'm familiar with the eroge & hanabira ones, up until now I didn't know it was Peco who designed the characters in Mayoi Neko Overrun! I wonder what's up with the change of drawing style ...

Heh, you're the exact opposite. Must be a bit of a let down to see the Hanabira stuff first and then Mayoi Neko Overrun! Maybe the change made them look more marketable for an anime adaptation, with a simpler style...

Actually Peco is well known for the visual novel series Sono Hanabira first before the anime adaption of Mayoi Neko Overrun. That is why the yuri series is included as a bonus because these are his famous artworks since he has been the original artist for the whole series of Sono Hanabira.

This is a great review from you. I couldn't get these artworks myself so it was nice of you to share.
