I was quite surprised by the contents in the new K-ON! Super Illustrations Vol. 1, as it features a combination of official art by the manga creator Kakifly (かきふらい) and tribute illustrations by a wide range of well-known (and relatively unknown) artists. It's an interesting mix, and it just makes me think they didn't have enough of either to put out a full art book. But seeing as how it's labeled as volume one, we can be expecting more of these in the future.

Putidevil's very petite Comiket 77 release is a full color illustration collection of the artist's signature softly colored, wide-eyed girls. Putidevil, probably best known from her art work on Pixiv has been appearing with increasing frequency in printed publications like Headphone Girls and 100 Masters of Bishojo Painting.

With a little something old as something new, Nagi Ryou's Comiket 77 release COLORS compiles three volumes of S.E.C (Sensuous Expression Content according to the cover) doujinshi into one 32-page, full color collection of art work from the past few years. The cover art is new to the book, but the rest of the content came from S.E.C volumes 00, 01, and 03 along with a couple of postcards released at past Comic Markets.

I think most people are familiar with the Taiwanese artist Capura. L through the artist's elaborately detailed Touhou illustrations. And as beautiful as those illustrations are, it made me really curious to see what kind of art work would be featured in an original collection. Luckily, Comiket 77 gave us the chance to find out exactly what that would be, with the release of Recollect, a collection of Capura. L's original illustrations.

Rui Kousaki's GLASS HEART 5 is another beautiful full-color collection in his great series of illustration doujins put out during the Comic Markets. If you're not familiar with the artist, he has a really unique style (especially with the way he does faces) and does a lot of fantasy-style art work, with knights, armor and elves. Though of course, not all of the illustrations are like that.

Miyasu Risa released several items with her circle D.N.A. Lab during Comiket 77, but the one item I wanted was her artbook-sized illustration book Grande Desserts. This A4-sized, 100-page (covers included) collection has 74 pages in full color and plenty of illustrations ranging from original characters, to fan arts and from sexy to completely not-safe-for-work illustrations ^^; It's a very thorough collection, to say the least.

RubiconHearts is a newly established circle of artists who released their first doujinshi during winter Comiket 77 with the aptly titled 『Kyoto, Spring.』, headlining with original illustrations by artists Takeuchi Takashi (Type-Moon) and Kobayashi Jin (School Rumble). The mission statement of RubiconHearts is truly a noble one, wanting to show the beauty of printed art with a presentation that they feel digital art cannot yet capture.

H2SO4's Comiket 77 release is a compilation of previous releases titled Island of Horizon Selection 2005 - 2007. It already sounds quite dated considering it's already 2010, but H2SO4's older works look just as polished and professional as his new ones. If you've seen my previous reviews for H2SO4's works Tropical Nights and Shiroi Hanabira, you will feel a small sense of déjà vu. I considered avoiding photographing images you've seen before in the other reviews, but it wouldn't really be the most objective presentation.

nattoli.net is a blog of anime art book, magazine, and doujinshi reviews. In the mix you'll also find wallpapers, opinions, buying tips and my thoughts on collecting art books.
