I was very excited to pick up Fuyuno Haruaki and Ginta's Comiket 79 collaboration GAINAX Girl Mix as I was anticipating both Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann and Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt goodness inside. And lo and behold, it's there, and in ways much more creative than I imagined.
GAINAX Girl Mix is a B5-sized staple-bound book that is 24-pages when counting the covers. And in this case, the outside and inside covers are used for art work along with the artist messages from Ginta and Fuyuno Haruaki. As you might expect, especially from Ginta, some of the illustrations are meant for a mature audience and I'm sorry to say that four of the illustrations meet that criteria. This includes some amazing versions of Yoko from TTGL and Nono from Aim for the Top 2! illustrated by Fuyuno Haruaki that you won't be seeing in this review ^^;
I was impressed to see that the "Mix" part of the title GAINAX Girl Mix was taken literally, incorporating distinct character elements like costumes and hairstyles on girls from other series. The Neon Genesis Evangelion Asuka illustration above incorporates TTGL Yoko's skull hair-clips, bra, and flame motifs onto the NGE plugsuit, with a Lagann-style version of EVA-02 in the background. In Ginta's illustration, the FLCL girls Mamimi and Haruko are dressed up in Panty and Stocking's angel gear, but keep their FLCL signature items---a guitar and a camera.
Fuyuno Haruaki also illustrates a couple of character cross-over works with all the girls in bikinis and swimsuits, featuring girls from Nadia Secret of Blue Water, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Aim for the Top 2!, and the oft neglected Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi.
GAINAX Girl Mix has a Panty & Stocking guest illustration by Usami Rui (ウサミ ルイ) before it moves into Fuyuno Haruaki's rough sketches for the finished illustration in the book. There aren't any from Ginta though. There are also a few 4-koma comics, followed by a bit of GAINAX LEGO® mastery. GAINAX Girl Mix is a really fun collection, and all the illustrations are newly drawn for the book, which is really something that elevates my opinion on any doujinshi ^^
